White House bans CNN from travelling with Trump on Air Force

• The exclusion follows a temporary court ruling forcing the administration to restore press credentials after banning CNN, Politico, and MS NOW. Major television networks previously halted coverage in solidarity before briefly resuming pool duties.
• Press association leaders warned that restricting rotation pool access undermines independent presidential coverage, while the administration continues promoting its own streaming outlet, Trump TV.

The White House has barred CNN from traveling aboard Air Force One with Donald Trump for a planned trip to Tennessee, marking the latest escalation in an ongoing dispute over presidential press access.

CNN was scheduled to cover Trump's attendance at a college football game in Knoxville on Saturday until a revised White House schedule released Friday night omitted the network. No other news organization was listed to fill the vacant seat in the media rotation.

The Air Force One exclusion follows a federal court order instructing the administration to restore White House credentials for CNN, Politico, and MS NOW. Trump had previously revoked access for the three outlets, accusing them of unfair coverage.

In response to the initial ban, the four other major television networks in the White House pool rotation, ABC, CBS, Fox News, and NBC, temporarily halted broadcasts of Trump’s appearances in solidarity. 

Standard pool operations briefly resumed on Friday after reporters were granted entry to cover events alongside visiting Chinese leader Xi Jinping. However, the White House continued to restrict CNN and MS NOW journalists at specific events, including a state dinner arrival.

Press freedom advocates and industry representatives warned that altering the press pool system threatens independent public oversight.

"If the government is only showing you what it wants, then you have to question, what are we missing? That's why we need independent actors to be the observers,” Weijia Jiang, Former President of the White House Correspondents' Association said.

Trump defended the restrictions on social media, questioning why outlets providing predominantly negative coverage should maintain access to the White House. Concurrently, the administration has expanded its direct-to-consumer media efforts through its official streaming channel, Trump TV.

Attorneys representing the affected news organizations face a court deadline to file for a preliminary injunction that would formally suspend administration attempts to limit media access.
