US President Donald Trump hailed his “truly great friendship” with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday as he welcomed him to the White House for a closely watched state visit.
“President Xi and I have forged a friendship, a truly great friendship, actually, built on mutual respect and the vital interests of our people,” Trump said as the two leaders delivered remarks at the White House.
Trump said the talks would address several “pressing issues,” including security, technology and artificial intelligence.
“During this visit, we will also discuss pressing issues concerning security, technology, and super intelligence, SI,” Trump said.
“The decisions we make in these areas today can promote peace and prosperity for decades and decades to come.”
Xi urges communication
Xi said the United States and China have a “historic responsibility” to advance human development and called for stronger communication between the two countries.
“China and the United States, as two major countries, shoulder a historic responsibility of advancing human development and progress,” Xi said.
“We should strengthen communication.”
Xi also stressed the need to prevent tensions between Washington and Beijing from escalating into conflict.
“China and the United States must hold the line on maintaining no conflict and no confrontation between us,” he said, adding that the two militaries should maintain regular dialogue and strengthen mechanisms for crisis communication and prevention.
AI cooperation
Artificial intelligence was among the issues highlighted by both leaders, with Xi calling for the technology to be developed and managed in a way that serves humanity.
“We have both the capability and responsibility to develop and manage AI for good and ensure that the development of AI is always under human control,” Xi said.
Pandas bound for Atlanta
Xi also announced that two giant pandas, Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, would travel to the United States in the coming days as part of a conservation agreement.
“In a few days, two pandas, Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, will come to their new home in Zoo Atlanta and meet with the American people,” Xi said.
