Palestinian flag-waving fan removed from 9/11 anniversary game

• This comes amid a series of incidents involving fans waving Palestinian flags on the field in sporting events. 

A man carrying a Palestinian flag ran onto the field at Yankee Stadium on Friday night in the seventh inning of a Subway Series game between the New York Yankees and New York Mets that both teams had dedicated to honoring first responders on the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.  

The man came out of the left-field seats and sprinted toward center field, waving the flag as stadium security and police pursued him. 

He was tackled short of the outfield wall. As security carried him off the field, sections of the crowd began chanting "USA! USA!" 

Fans in the stands threw drinks, including beer cans, in the man's direction, and he could be heard shouting and seen struggling against the guards restraining him, according to video posted on social media and accounts from reporters at the stadium. 

He was escorted out of the ballpark. No further details on his identity or on any charges he may face had been released by Friday night.

Play resumed several minutes later.

Palestinian flags on the field

The episode is also the latest in a recurring pattern of demonstrators carrying Palestinian flags onto the field of play at major sporting events since the start of the Oct. 2023 assault on Gaza. 

Notable prior incidents include a cricket game in India in Nov. 2023, the Paris Olympics in July 2024, and the Superbowl in Feb. 2025.
