The US military said Saturday it had struck and destroyed three oil tankers linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps after the Iranian military organization fired on American warships.
"Following Iran’s failed attacks, CENTCOM permanently disabled the IRGC crude oil carriers M/T Downy off the coast of Kharg Island and M/T Stark 1 near Jask," Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement on X.
"American forces also completely destroyed the unladen crude oil carrier M/T Kylo... in the Gulf of Oman, striking the vessel in multiple critical locations to render it inoperable after the crew was directed to abandon ship," it continued.
Video posted by CENTCOM showed large fireballs and billowing flames after projectiles slammed into the ships.
The three ships targeted were "part of a multibillion-dollar shadow network that funds the IRGC and its regional proxies," it said.
"Iran has no means by which to defend them," it added.
No US soldiers were hurt after a destroyer and aircraft carrier "successfully evaded multiple unprovoked Iranian attacks," it said.
CENTCOM's commander, Admiral Brad Cooper, said: "Let the message to the IRGC be clear: If you shoot at two of our ships, we will impose an even higher economic cost -- taking out three of yours."
The strikes come as Washington insists that it is working to economically strangle Iran, including a blockade of its ports, while keeping alive the threat of military action.
Iran, for its part, has blocked commercial traffic through the critical Strait of Hormuz by threatening shipping that doesn't have its permission to transit.
The two sides exchanged fire earlier this week, with the US saying it was targeting the IRGC's ability to attack commercial shipping while Iran fired on US military bases in nearby Jordan.

Americans in the region were urged to “exercise heightened vigilance and be aware of potential flight cancellations, airspace closures, and travel disruptions.”
The embassy noted that Iran and supportive groups “may target other U.S. interests overseas,” including businesses and institutions.
The alert follows a series of similar warnings from US missions across the Gulf this summer, amid heightened US-Iran hostilities that have included strikes and reciprocal threats.

The crews of the two tankers were reportedly evacuated to shore using lifeboats.

Death toll rises to five after wedding attack in Sirik
The death toll from a US airstrike that hit a wedding gathering in Sirik County, Hormozgan Province, has risen to five, Iranian authorities said Saturday.
Asiyeh Molaeinejad, 22, died from injuries sustained in the incident, according to the head of Hormozgan University of Medical Sciences.
Iranian authorities said more than 70 people were injured in the incident, which occurred during a wider wave of US airstrikes in areas along the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian officials said the gathering was a wedding celebration in Kohestak Port.
Five injured people remain hospitalized, according to the Hormozgan Governorate. Four are being treated in intensive care, while one remains in a regular ward.

US Central Command spokesperson Capt. Tim Hawkins said the military was investigating reports of the incident and reiterated that the US military "never targets civilians."
US Vice President JD Vance also said the incident was under investigation, while expressing skepticism about some of the Iranian reports.
"We're investigating it because obviously we care. We want to know," Vance said, adding that if the US military makes mistakes, "they learn from them."
US officials are examining several possible explanations for the incident, including the possibility of a direct strike, a missile ricocheting from another target, or an Iranian air-defense interceptor that went off course, according to reports.
