Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Russian President Vladimir Putin are expected to meet next week in Kyrgyzstan as Tehran and Moscow deepen cooperation on nuclear energy, Iran’s semi-official Mehr news agency reported.
The two leaders are expected to hold talks on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Bishkek, according to Iran’s Ambassador to Russia, Kazem Jalali, as cited by Mehr.
Jalali said Iran and Russia have agreed to a memorandum of understanding worth $25 billion for the construction of new nuclear power plants.
He added that land has already been designated for a new nuclear facility near the Persian Gulf.
The nuclear agreement is separate from a memorandum of understanding signed between Iran and the US in June, according to the report.
The meeting is expected to take place during the SCO summit, a regional organization focused on issues including security, trade and political cooperation across Europe and Asia.
The organization has 10 member states, including China, Russia, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.
The planned meeting comes as Tehran and Moscow continue to expand strategic and economic ties, including cooperation in the nuclear energy sector.
