A protest outside Minneapolis City Hall descended into chaos Saturday after far-right activist Jake Lang and his group arrived in two vehicles, with footage showing a person dressed as Spider-Man confronting Lang on the back of a pickup truck.

Lang arrived near City Hall at around 11:50 a.m. with six other people in two vehicles, according to the Minneapolis Police Department. Police said both vehicles then drove onto the sidewalk toward a crowd gathered outside the building.

As counterprotesters surrounded the vehicles, footage circulating online showed a person wearing a full Spider-Man costume climbing onto the back of Lang’s truck and striking him before being pulled away.

Police said both Lang’s group and counterprotesters deployed mace during the confrontation. Officers intervened and moved the vehicles away from the crowd, while later tracking them to separate locations.

With assistance from the Minnesota State Patrol and Bloomington police, authorities stopped the vehicles near Washington Avenue and Interstate 35W and in Bloomington. All occupants, including Lang, were arrested on probable cause of riot, and both vehicles were impounded, police said.

Four additional arrests were made near City Hall. Police also said an officer was assaulted and taken to hospital for treatment before being released.

The confrontation drew widespread attention online, with footage of the Spider-Man-clad counterprotester quickly going viral.

Lang, who was pardoned after being convicted in connection with the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol, has continued to stage political demonstrations across the country.
