A passenger’s laptop caught fire aboard an American Airlines flight Friday, forcing crew members to extinguish the blaze mid-flight and prompting emergency medical treatment upon landing.

The incident occurred aboard American Airlines Flight 2398 en route from Atlanta, Georgia, to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport in Texas.

According to air traffic control audio recordings, the pilot reported a cabin fire in the rear of the aircraft, stating that flight attendants were actively attempting to put it out.

Upon landing safely at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, the aircraft taxied to the gate, where emergency medical personnel met the plane.

One passenger received medical treatment on site and was subsequently released.

American Airlines issued a statement confirming that the plane landed safely and commended the flight crew for their prompt action in managing the situation.

Rising concerns over lithium battery hazards in aviation

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) warns that lithium-ion batteries used in laptops and personal electronics pose severe thermal risks if damaged, overheated, or overcharged.

The agency has recorded 58 verified lithium battery incidents involving smoke, fire, or extreme heat on commercial aircraft so far this year.

Over the last two decades, laptop-related battery failures have accounted for 84 reported aviation incidents, prompting strict aviation regulations requiring all spare lithium batteries and power banks to be stowed exclusively in carry-on baggage.
