Mamdani says he, wife received death threats over Gaza, Iran views

• New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he and his wife have received death threats over their views on ‘Israel’, Gaza, and Iran.
• Mamdani reiterated that Benjamin Netanyahu should face ICC proceedings but acknowledged New York City cannot independently enforce an ICC arrest warrant.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he and his wife have received death threats following public statements they made about ‘Israel’, the war on the Gaza Strip, and Iran.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Mamdani said the threats were a consequence of speaking out on the issues.

"It's difficult to prepare for death threats, but when you're prepared to stand up for everyone, there are consequences," he said.

Mamdani said he had also received death threats while serving in the New York State Legislature, citing his criticism of US military assistance to ‘Israel’ and his opposition to the killing of Palestinian civilians.

He added that the threats began before he became mayor and have continued since taking office. According to Mamdani, his wife has also faced criticism and threats because of her views on ‘Israel’ and Gaza.

In a separate interview with The New York Times, Mamdani said ‘Israeli’ Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should face proceedings in The Hague, referring to the International Criminal Court's arrest warrant against him.

Mamdani later clarified that New York City does not have the independent legal authority to enforce an ICC arrest warrant, saying responsibility for any such action rests with the US federal government.
