  • US says it struck dozens of Iranian military targets near the Strait of Hormuz to further weaken Tehran's ability to threaten commercial shipping.

The US military says it has completed an additional round of strikes against Iran, targeting dozens of military sites near the Strait of Hormuz and along the country's coastline.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the operation concluded at 10:00pm EST on July 14 (02:00 GMT on July 15) after a seven-hour campaign involving fighter aircraft, drones and naval vessels.

According to CENTCOM, US forces launched precision-guided munitions against Iranian missile and drone sites, naval capabilities and coastal defence systems.

The military said the strikes were intended "to further degrade Iran's ability to threaten commercial shipping and civilian crews" operating in and around the Strait of Hormuz.

The operation came on the same day the United States resumed a naval blockade on vessels travelling to or from Iranian ports and coastal areas. CENTCOM said the blockade took effect at 4:00pm ET (20:00 GMT) on July 14.
