  • Iran's IRGC says it has temporarily closed the Strait of Hormuz, while a US official says an IRGC missile struck a commercial cargo ship

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy said on Sunday that it has temporarily closed the Strait of Hormuz "until further notice," according to Iran's state broadcaster, IRIB.

In a statement carried by the broadcaster, the IRGC Navy said foreign interference and attempts to establish what it described as an "illegal route" for shipping through the strategic waterway would be met with a firm response.

The force said several vessels had ignored warnings to correct their course and remain within what it called the approved navigation route. It added that one vessel, which it accused of switching off its tracking systems and endangering maritime security, was stopped after warning shots were fired.

The IRGC Navy said no vessels would be allowed to transit the Strait of Hormuz until what it described as US interference in the area comes to an end.

It also warned that any new attack or violation would be met with a forceful response, including strikes on what it called new enemy bases in the region.

At the same time, a US official said the IRGC fired a missile at a commercial cargo ship attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. The official said the vessel was hit and sustained damage.
