  • Trump says US–Iran deal still on track despite Beirut strike and Iranian retaliation threat

President Donald Trump told Axios that the US–Iran agreement aimed at ending the war remains on track for Sunday, despite 'Israel’s' strike in Beirut and Iranian threats of retaliation.

Trump said the escalation in Lebanon came just hours before Washington and Tehran were expected to sign the deal, which he described as having been temporarily disrupted but not derailed by the violence.

“It shook it up. It delayed the signing by a few hours. It was supposed to be now. Now it is scheduled for a few hours from now,” Trump told Axios in a phone call, adding that the Beirut strike forced a brief postponement of the signing timeline.

Iranian officials have not confirmed that the deal is expected to be signed on Sunday. Ebrahim Azizi, chair of the Iranian parliament’s national security committee, wrote on X that “a strong response is coming,” signaling continued tensions from Tehran.

Trump said he was shocked when his advisers briefed him on the Israeli strike in Beirut and said he reacted angrily toward 'Israeli' Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“It is so bad, I couldn’t believe it. An hour before we are supposed to sign the deal,” he said.

While acknowledging that Hezbollah had attacked 'Israel' first, Trump said the strike caused no damage and no casualties. He sharply criticized Netanyahu’s decision-making.

“Why did Bibi have to do a f*cking attack? I was so pissed off. I let him know. He has no fucking judgement. I let him know that,” Trump told Axios.

Trump argued the agreement with Iran would ultimately benefit 'Israel', saying it would block Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, require the disposal of nuclear material, and allow snap inspections of Iranian nuclear facilities.

It was not immediately clear whether Trump had received direct confirmation from Tehran that the signing would proceed as scheduled, despite his insistence that the deal remains on track.
