The department said the interception falls under the responsibility of US Central Command in the Indian Ocean and Pacific region, and is part of ongoing efforts to disrupt what it described as illicit maritime networks.

Enforcement operation in international waters

According to official statements, the boarding of MT Tiffany was carried out as part of a broader campaign targeting vessels subject to sanctions.

US forces said the operation took place in international waters and was aimed at preventing the movement of ships allegedly providing material support to Iran.

Warning over sanctioned shipping

Washington said it will continue efforts to enforce restrictions on maritime traffic linked to sanctioned entities, stressing that international waters cannot serve as safe passage for restricted vessels.

“We will continue to enforce the law to disrupt illicit networks,” the statement said, adding that the US will keep intercepting ships under sanctions.

Ongoing maritime pressure campaign

The US military also said it will maintain operations aimed at restricting the movement of vessels it considers linked to sanctioned activities, particularly those accused of supporting Iran-connected networks.

Officials framed the operation as part of a wider effort to limit “unlawful maritime maneuvering” and enforce existing sanctions regimes at sea.

The announcement comes amid heightened tensions in regional waters, where naval enforcement actions, sanctions, and ship seizures have increased alongside broader geopolitical confrontation involving Iran and the United States.
