French President urges Iranian counterpart to back regional de-escalation

French President Emmanuel Macron held discussions with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, urging Tehran to utilize the newly launched talks in Islamabad to achieve lasting regional de-escalation and stability.

Islamabad talks and security guarantees

During the discussions, Macron called on the Iranian leader to seize the diplomatic opportunity presented by the Islamabad negotiations. 

He advocated for the development of a demanding agreement that would provide solid security guarantees for the region, emphasizing that such a framework must involve all concerned nations.

Navigation in the Strait of Hormuz

Addressing maritime security, the French President emphasized the urgent necessity for Iran to swiftly restore freedom and security of navigation through the strategic Strait of Hormuz. 

Macron further noted that France stands ready to actively contribute to efforts aimed at securing the vital waterway.

Ceasefire and Lebanese sovereignty

The diplomatic discussions also covered the recent cessation of hostilities. Macron stressed the critical importance of fully respecting the established ceasefire agreements, with a specific focus on the situation in Lebanon. 

He reiterated France's full support for the actions of the official Lebanese authorities, firmly stating that the state institutions hold the sole legitimacy to exercise national sovereignty and determine the destiny of Lebanon.
