Authorities in the United Arab Emirates extinguished a fire on a fully loaded Kuwaiti crude oil tanker after it was attacked by Iran in Dubai port on Monday. The assault damaged the vessel’s hull and raised concerns about a possible oil spill.

The tanker, Al-Salmi, was reportedly targeted in the Al-Makhtaf area of Dubai, according to the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation, which called the attack “blatant Iranian aggression.” All 24 crew members were unharmed, UAE authorities confirmed.

Market impact and regional context

The attack comes amid a series of maritime incidents in the Gulf and Strait of Hormuz following the US-‘Israel’ offensive on Iran on February 28. Oil prices reacted sharply, with Brent crude futures rising more than two percent to $115.17 per barrel in early Asian trading, before slightly retreating after US President Donald Trump indicated readiness to end the war even if the Strait of Hormuz remains closed.

Brent crude is on track for a 59 percent gain in March, marking its largest monthly increase ever, driven by the Middle East conflict.

Maritime security concerns

Al-Salmi was carrying two million barrels of oil from Kuwait and Saudi Arabia to Qingdao, China. Experts note that recent incidents, including shelling near a Greek-owned container ship off Saudi Arabia, signal escalating risks for commercial vessels in the Gulf.
