  • Iran has established an eight-layer defensive strategy against airborne and amphibious US attacks.
  • Layers combine elite forces, drones, smart mines, and urban militias to target troops and equipment.
  • Strategy aims to lure adversaries into city fighting and mountainous terrain to negate technological advantage.

Iran has developed a sophisticated eight-layer defense system designed to counter potential US ground or amphibious operations, according to a report by Russian newspaper Pravda.

The multi-tiered strategy, coordinated between the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the regular army, begins with elite naval and airborne units stationed on islands and coastal lines to intercept landing forces before they advance. Smart mines, thermal surveillance, and anti-helicopter missile systems reinforce the first defensive line.

Gradual defensive layers

Subsequent layers include airborne brigades, mountain and mechanized units, and urban elite police units protecting cities. Heavy-equipped units such as the Imam Hussein and Imam Ali brigades, plus experienced veterans from regional conflicts like Syria, constitute the mid-level defenses. The final layers involve mass mobilization of civilians, particularly along western and southern borders.

Iran has also integrated advanced weaponry, including “Navvaf-2” and mobile smart mines “Arvand” and “Moham,” along with portable anti-helicopter missiles for infantry. Thousands of armed motorcycle and pickup units are deployed to create overlapping fields of fire to disrupt invading forces after landings.

Offensive-capable defense

According to Pravda, each defensive layer functions as an independent offensive system, capable of destroying enemy equipment and capturing personnel. Iran also emphasizes city and mountain warfare to exhaust technologically superior opponents. Electronic warfare tools are used to disrupt GPS and satellite communications, while hidden arms and supply caches across regions ensure continued resistance even if critical targets are temporarily seized.

The combined strategy aims to turn any US invasion into a protracted urban and mountainous conflict, nullifying advantages in air power and technology while maximizing Iranian terrain knowledge.
