Mexican drug cartel drones entered US airspace but were countered by the American military, a US administration official said on Wednesday after the surprise closure and subsequent reopening of flights at El Paso airport.

"Mexican cartel drones breached US airspace," the official said to AFP on condition of anonymity, adding that US forces "took action to disable the drones."

Mexico's president said that her government was investigating the incident.

President Claudia Sheinbaum added that she had "no information on the use of drones at the border."

A US official said US forces disabled the drones, forcing the brief closure of El Paso airport in Texas.
