On Saturday, Jordan’s Ministry of Labor clarified whether the Prime Minister’s notice on working hours during Ramadan applies to private sector establishments or is limited to public institutions.
The ministry stated that the current labor law does not include any legal requirement obliging private sector companies to reduce working hours during Ramadan 1447 AH / 2026 AD. This means working hours in the private sector remain governed by employment contracts and existing labor law, without mandatory adjustments.
Decision rests with employers
Ministry spokesperson Mohammad Al-Zyoud told Roya News that private sector employers have full authority to determine their employees’ working hours.
Each company can organize schedules according to its internal system and the nature of its economic activity, without direct interference from government notices issued for public institutions.
Scope of Prime Minister’s notice
The ministry emphasized that the Prime Minister’s notice, which set working hours from 9:00 AM to 2:30 PM, applies exclusively to:
- Ministries and official departments
- Public institutions and authorities
- Public universities
- Municipalities, joint service councils, and Greater Amman Municipality
- Government-owned companies
Encouragement to respect Ramadan
While not legally binding, the notice highlighted the importance of respecting the holy month and accommodating the needs of fasting employees.
Al-Zyoud noted that many private companies in Jordan have voluntarily adjusted working hours during Ramadan in previous years as part of social responsibility and employee consideration.
