  • British politician Peter Mandelson quits Labour Party amid fresh links to Jeffrey Epstein.
  • Mandelson previously lost the UK ambassador post over Epstein connections revealed in US Justice Department documents

Lord Peter Mandelson, a senior British political figure, has resigned from the Labour Party after new revelations surfaced about his friendship with the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Mandelson said he stepped down to spare the party “further embarrassment” after his name appeared in United States Department of Justice documents released Friday that outline Epstein’s network of associates. Mandelson was dismissed last year as the United Kingdom’s ambassador to the United States after initial ties to Epstein emerged.

In a letter on Sunday to Labour’s general secretary Hollie Ridley, Mandelson wrote that his name had once again become associated with “the justified fuss surrounding Jeffrey Epstein,” and expressed regret and sorrow over the situation.

Epstein Network and High-Profile Figures

Epstein’s circle has included several influential figures across politics, business and royalty. President Donald Trump acknowledged knowing Epstein in the 1990s and early 2000s, describing him as a “terrific guy” in past interviews, though he later said he was “not a fan” following Epstein’s arrest.

Ex-Prince Andrew has been among the most prominent figures tied to Epstein. He settled a civil lawsuit in the United States brought by one of Epstein’s victims, though he denied allegations of sexual misconduct. The prince relinquished public duties amid the fallout.

Newly released Epstein files also reference French President Emmanuel Macron. Documents suggest that Macron, then France’s economy minister in 2016, was mentioned in correspondence regarding business discussions with Epstein. Later emails from 2018, after Macron had assumed the presidency, indicate he allegedly sought Epstein’s advice on governance, public relations, and socio-economic policies.

One email quoted Macron as expressing interest in rethinking international institutions and promoting a more “progressist” future. No official comment has been issued by the French presidency regarding these documents.

Epstein was arrested in 2019 on federal charges of sex trafficking minors in Florida and New York. He died in jail that August in what authorities ruled a suicide.

Backstory on Mandelson’s Role

Peter Mandelson rose to prominence as a key strategist in New Labour and served in multiple Cabinet roles under Prime Ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. His second appointment as UK ambassador to Washington was short-lived. The British government cited concerns over his past links to Epstein following media scrutiny.

What’s Next

Labour leaders have yet to say how Mandelson’s departure will affect party operations. Pressure is increasing on political parties worldwide to disclose any ties between members and Epstein’s network.
