- Newly released US Justice Department records show Indian American filmmaker Mira Nair attended a 2009 afterparty at Ghislaine Maxwell’s home following her film’s premiere.
- Email in the files names former President Bill Clinton and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos among other guests but does not allege illegal conduct.
Newly disclosed court records connected to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein show filmmaker Mira Nair, mother of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, was present at an afterparty hosted by Ghislaine Maxwell in 2009.
The event followed the release of Nair’s film Amelia, according to an email contained in the tranche of documents made public Friday by the US Justice Department. The afterparty at Maxwell’s Manhattan townhouse included several well known figures.
Email Shows Guest List and Reaction
The email, sent by publicist Peggy Siegal shortly after the gathering, lists former President Bill Clinton and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos among attendees. It also mentions “Jean Pigoni, director Mira Nair”, referring to the filmmaker. The message offers a glimpse into the atmosphere at the event, noting a mixed reaction to Amelia.
“Film received tepid reaction although women like it much more,” the email states, adding comments about another promotional event involving actor Hilary Swank.
The correspondence does not allege any unlawful activity by Nair or other guests. Federal prosecutors and civil liberties experts have emphasized that inclusion in the Epstein-related records reflects social contact or communication, not evidence of criminal involvement.
Broader Record Releases
The files are part of the latest disclosure under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, passed after years of pressure for broader access to records tied to Epstein’s activities. The documents include emails, images and videos compiled during various federal investigations.
Among the other material released is an email from Epstein to Tesla CEO Elon Musk from November 2012, inquiring about helicopter logistics. The breadth of the communications highlights Epstein’s extensive social and professional network, which spanned politics, business and entertainment.
Justice Department Statement
Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said the release was intended to promote transparency while protecting victims and sensitive information. Portions of the records were redacted or withheld for privacy and legal reasons.
Epstein died in a New York jail cell in August 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges. Maxwell was convicted in 2021 on charges related to recruiting and abusing underage girls and was sentenced to twenty years in prison.
