Russian President Vladimir Putin met on Friday with Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Larijani, who made an unannounced visit to Moscow amid rising tensions between Washington and Tehran.

In a statement, the Kremlin said that “the head of state received in the Kremlin Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Larijani, who is visiting Russia.”

Iran’s ambassador to Russia, Kazem Jalali, said via the embassy’s Telegram channel that the talks focused on “important regional and international issues.”

The visit comes as US President Donald Trump has threatened possible military action against Tehran while also urging it to reach an agreement over its nuclear program.

Moscow, which maintains close ties with Iran, has offered to mediate between Washington and Tehran.
