  • An Argentine man reportedly confronts an 'Israeli' tourist as he attempts to start fires in Los Glaciares National Park.

Argentine authorities are investigating reports that an 'Israeli' tourist was allegedly involved in starting fires in Los Glaciares National Park, a protected area in Patagonia known for its forests, glaciers, and natural resources.

A video circulating online shows an Argentine man confronting the reportedly 'Israeli' tourists. In the video, he can be heard saying, "You can't light a fire here! It's forbidden! Forbidden!" The footage was recently reposted by Argentine outlet Página 12.

While mainstream Argentine newspapers often use the general term “foreign tourists” (extranjeros) to avoid legal liability until police formally confirm identities, specialized local outlets and social media channels have been more specific.

According to follow-up interviews with the hiker featured in the video, as well as coverage from other news outlets and local radio stations such as FM Dimensión, he has reportedly confirmed his belief that the tourists were of 'Israeli' origin, based on his interaction with them and their accent.

Officials stressed that the investigation is ongoing and that nothing has been legally or forensically confirmed.

Park rangers and environmental officials said they intervened after noticing suspicious activity in a restricted zone. The individual was taken into custody for questioning, though authorities emphasized that their identity, intent, and involvement remain unverified.

Unverified reports of suspicious objects

Separately, local authorities reported finding suspicious objects near Lake Epuyén, including items described in preliminary reports as resembling military-grade devices, such as M26 IM grenades reportedly used by the 'Israeli' military.

Officials cautioned, however, that their origin, nature, and authenticity have not been confirmed.

The area was cordoned off while forensic teams and bomb disposal specialists conducted inspections. Authorities urged the public to avoid speculation until official findings are released.

Wildfires continue to affect Patagonia

The alleged incident comes amid widespread wildfires in Patagonia, particularly in Chubut province, where thousands of hectares of forest have already been affected. Dry conditions, strong winds, and high temperatures have allowed fires to spread rapidly, forcing evacuations and putting pressure on local firefighting resources.

Officials warned that even small fires, whether intentional or accidental, can cause large-scale damage to the region’s fragile ecosystem.

legal and diplomatic follow-up

The alleged arson case is being treated with high seriousness due to both environmental and public safety concerns. Under Argentine law, intentionally starting fires in protected areas carries severe criminal penalties.

Government sources also said diplomatic channels are engaged, with Argentine authorities coordinating with relevant foreign representatives while investigations continue.

Investigation ongoing

Authorities reiterated that all information released so far is preliminary. Further details will be made public once evidence is verified and the investigation is completed.
