The Greater Amman Municipality in Jordan announced maximum preparedness on Friday as a strong low-pressure system continues to affect the Kingdom, bringing heavy rainfall and heightened risks of flooding.

The municipality said all field crews and heavy machinery have been deployed across key locations, including tunnels, main roads, and low-lying areas, to ensure water drainage and maintain traffic flow. Emergency teams are working around the clock to respond to incidents linked to water accumulation and road blockages.

Emergency contact numbers activated

As part of its emergency response, the municipality urged residents to report any incidents without hesitation through its unified call center, which is operating 24 hours a day. Citizens can contact the short number 102 or the direct line 117180 to report emergencies or request assistance.

Climate resilience measures in place

The municipality said its response falls within a broader strategy to address the impacts of climate change, which has led to increasingly intense and sudden rainfall events. Measures include inspecting rainwater drainage inlets, securing submersible pumps in tunnels along major roads, and coordinating closely with the Meteorological Department to monitor peak weather conditions.

Residents living in basement or ground-level apartments were advised to take preventive measures to avoid flooding. The municipality also warned against connecting rooftop rainwater pipes to the sewage network, citing the risk of street flooding.

Emergency rooms across all 22 municipal zones remain on continuous standby until weather conditions improve.

Public Security issues urgent safety warnings

Meanwhile, the Public Security Directorate renewed urgent calls for caution as the cold air mass and low-pressure system intensify. Authorities stressed that adherence to public safety instructions is critical to preventing accidents and injuries during extreme weather.

Residents in low-lying areas and near valleys were urged to stay away from flood-prone zones. Homeowners with properties below street level were advised to ensure water pumps are ready. The directorate also warned of the danger posed by unsecured objects that could be blown away by strong winds, including metal sheets, water tank covers, and rooftop fixtures.

Traffic and heating safety

Drivers were urged to exercise extreme caution, reduce speed, and account for poor visibility and slippery roads. Motorists were also asked to follow instructions issued by security personnel deployed across the Kingdom.

The directorate reiterated warnings on the safe use of heating appliances, cautioning against suffocation risks. Residents were advised to ventilate homes regularly, avoid leaving heaters on while sleeping, and ensure hoses and connections are secure.

Emergency line remains available

The Public Security Directorate concluded by urging citizens and residents to contact the unified emergency number 911 when needed, confirming that operations rooms and Civil Defense crews remain fully prepared to respond to any incidents as the weather system continues.
