  • Somalia’s ambassador to the Arab League calls Somaliland an inseparable part of the Somali state.
  • Mogadishu seeks an emergency Arab League meeting to reject the ‘Israeli’ move.

Somalia’s permanent representative to the Arab League and ambassador in Cairo, Ali Abdi Awrai, on Saturday reaffirmed that the Somaliland region is an inseparable part of Somali territory, stressing that any attempts to recognize it as an independent entity are null and void.

Awrai issued a strong condemnation of statements by ‘Israeli’ Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding what he described as a supposed recognition of the so-called “Republic of Somaliland”, followed by an announcement of plans to establish full diplomatic relations.

Call for Arab League action

The Somali envoy said his country is calling for an emergency meeting of the Arab League Council to examine what he described as dangerous decisions that threaten Somalia’s sovereignty and unity.

“Somalia calls for an urgent meeting of the Arab League Council to address the repercussions of these serious decisions, condemn this irresponsible move, and reject it clearly and explicitly, in solidarity with the Federal Republic of Somalia,” Awrai said.

He added that the move also violates core principles of national sovereignty and territorial integrity of Arab states and represents an attempt to destabilize the Horn of Africa.

Violation of international law

Awrai said the statements and measures announced by ‘Israel’ constitute a flagrant violation of the sovereignty and territorial unity of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

He stressed that the move contradicts international law, the UN Charter, and resolutions of both the Arab League and the African Union, all of which affirm respect for state sovereignty, territorial integrity, and non-interference in internal affairs.

Cabinet response in Mogadishu

In this context, the Somali ambassador said the government in Mogadishu held an emergency cabinet meeting to assess the serious implications of the decision.

He said the cabinet reaffirmed Somalia’s total and unequivocal rejection of the ‘Israeli’ recognition and any related measures, underscoring that Somaliland remains an integral part of the Somali state under international law.
