Oscar-winning actors Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara have officially signed on as executive producers for the Palestinian short film "I’m Glad You’re Dead Now", according to reports by Variety.
The announcement adds significant industry backing to the drama, which has already established itself as a critical darling after winning the Short Film Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year.
The A-list couple’s involvement was made public as the film completed a triumphant regional run this month, culminating in a high-profile presentation at the Doha Film Institute’s Ajyal Film Festival, which concluded on Nov. 28.
Hollywood Backing for a Palestinian Voice
Phoenix and Mara, both known for supporting socially conscious cinema, released statements highlighting the film’s "urgent" themes. Directed by and starring Palestinian filmmaker Tawfeek Barhom, the 13-minute drama follows two brothers who return to the island of their childhood to confront buried secrets and trauma.

"This is a film that confronts memory, trauma, and reconciliation in a way that feels urgent and necessary today," Phoenix said. "I’m proud to be part of its future."
Mara added that she was struck by the film’s artistic command. "From the moment I saw 'I’m Glad You’re Dead Now', its emotional weight and restrained power stayed with me," she said. "I am honored to support Tawfeek’s vision and the film’s continuing journey."
According to the producers, the couple will now be actively involved in the film’s campaign, participating in press engagements and festival introductions to help widen its global reach.
A Strategic Partnership
Director Tawfeek Barhom welcomed the partnership as a major step for the project. "I am deeply moved that Rooney Mara and Joaquin Phoenix have chosen to stand with this film and its story," Barhom said. "Their belief honors the film’s spirit, and their creative support will be invaluable."

The film is a co-production between Palestine, France, and Greece, produced by Barhom alongside Akis Polizos, Stylianos Kotionis, and Alexandre Perrier.
Regional Homecoming in Doha
The announcement coincided with the film’s screening at the Ajyal Film Festival in Doha, Qatar. The film was a standout selection in the "International Short Film Competition," marking its premiere in the Arab world.
While the film had already secured the top prize at Cannes, its presentation in Doha served as a significant homecoming for the Palestinian narrative. The screening bridged the film’s European success with its cultural roots, drawing a sold-out crowd and solidifying its status as one of the year’s most important short films.
With Phoenix and Mara now steering the ship, the film is expected to gain renewed momentum as it eyes further international accolades.
