The European Union Council approved 59.5 million euros (around USD 68.5 million) in military aid on Monday for the armed forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Chad, and Jordan, under the European Peace Facility (EPF), in a move aimed at enhancing defense capabilities and regional stability.
For the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the EU allocated 10 million euros (USD 11.5 million) to provide the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) with military equipment. This marks the second EPF support measure for the FARDC, bringing total assistance to 30 million euros (USD 34.5 million). According to the EU Council, the funding will provide non-lethal equipment to strengthen command and control, improve deployment and medical operations, and facilitate river-border patrols. Deliveries are expected before the end of 2026.
Chad will receive 14.5 million euros (USD 16.7 million) in assistance, marking the EU’s first bilateral EPF support to the country. While Chad already benefits from EU backing through the Multi-National Task Force against Boko Haram and the G5 Sahel Joint Force, the new funding will focus on professionalizing the Armed Forces of Chad (ANT). Measures include upgrading the Koundoul Academy for non-commissioned officers (ENSOA-K), providing educational materials, and revising the curriculum based on Chad’s request.
Jordan will receive 35 million euros (USD 40.3 million), increasing EU support under the EPF to 55.25 million euros (USD 63.66 million). The council said, “Today’s decision signals the EU’s growing engagement with Jordan, marked by the recent signature of the EU-Jordan Strategic and Comprehensive Partnership.” Aid to Jordan will enhance air defense and regional security by providing short-range radars, a local command and control system, and related equipment and training for the Jordanian Armed Forces.
Established in March 2021, the EPF is a key instrument for EU actions under its common foreign and security policy, supporting the defense capacities of third countries and international organizations.
