  • Germany sparks outrage by treating donkeys from Gaza while refusing medical care for injured children.

Germany’s recent decision to admit donkeys from Gaza for treatment has ignited widespread criticism, especially in light of its refusal to take in injured or sick Palestinian children from the same region.

Donkeys Accepted, Children Denied

According to reports, four donkeys rescued from Gaza were flown to Germany this month and are now being treated in a zoo or sanctuary in Oppenheim. This move has drawn harsh backlash: critics argue that it reflects a deeply disturbing double standard, where animals are provided refuge and care while some children from Gaza are effectively shut out.

Only two children from Gaza are believed to have been admitted to Germany for medical treatment in the past two years.  Meanwhile, several German cities, including Hanover and Düsseldorf, expressed willingness to host more young patients from Gaza, but their offers were reportedly blocked by the federal government.

Political and Practical Barriers

The German Interior Ministry has justified the refusal on logistical and security grounds, citing "complex procedures" and the need for thorough vetting of accompanying family members. Some city officials, however, have pushed back strongly. Hanover’s mayor, Belit Onay, called Berlin’s decision “disappointing and incomprehensible.”

Animal Rescue or Political Messaging?

Critics also question the rationale behind rescuing the donkeys. The animals, often used in Gaza as transportation during fuel shortages and crises, were reportedly evacuated through organizations with links to 'Israeli' animal-welfare groups.  Detractors argue that this is not purely an act of care, but rather a symbolic gesture masking deeper political motives — effectively prioritizing animals over humans.

Broader Concerns Over Gaza Policy

The controversy comes amid wider debate in Germany over its role in responding to Gaza’s humanitarian crisis. Political and civil society voices are raising questions about why the government appears more willing to host animals than wounded children.
