A suicide bombing outside a courthouse in a residential area of Islamabad killed 12 people and injured 27 others, Pakistan’s interior minister announced Monday.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi told reporters at the scene that the attack occurred at 12:39 PM local time (07:39 GMT) in the city’s Kachhari area, where the courthouse is located.

He said the attacker “waited outside the court complex for some time before detonating his explosive device near a police vehicle,” adding that authorities are working to identify the bomber and determine where he came from.

Witnesses described scenes of chaos following the explosion, which damaged several vehicles and sent people running for safety.

“When I parked my car and entered the compound, I heard a loud blast near the gate,” lawyer Rustam Malik said.

Another witness told AFP that “there was complete chaos. Lawyers and people ran inside the complex. I saw two bodies near the gate, and several cars were burning.”
