The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates has officially reinstated 19 diplomats who previously defected from the former regime, restoring them to their former roles within the Ministry.
The decision was announced following a meeting chaired by Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani, with all reinstated diplomats present. According to an official statement, Minister al-Shibani signed the reinstatement decree during the gathering, formally reintegrating the diplomats into the Ministry’s ranks.
The group of reinstated officials includes ambassadors, consuls, and administrative personnel. Some of the names on the list are Basil Niyazi, Maher al-Jammaz, Khaled al-Ayubi, Hussein Sabbagh, Lamia al-Hariri, and Ahmad al-Hariri, among others.
Earlier in August, the Ministry had recalled several diplomats from key Arab and Western capitals, including postings in Beirut, Riyadh, Berlin, Dubai, Istanbul, and New York, signaling a broader effort to consolidate Syria’s diplomatic network.
Since April, the Ministry has issued appeals to defected diplomats to update their personal information, describing the initiative as part of a national strategy to “revive their essential role in building a renewed Syria.”
