JD Vance expresses optimism Gaza ceasefire will hold during 'Israel' visit
- US Vice President JD Vance said he is optimistic the Gaza ceasefire will hold.
- Vance is visiting 'Israel' to support the truce and post-war reconstruction plans.
- He said maintaining peace will require constant monitoring and cooperation.
US Vice President JD Vance said on Tuesday he was “greatly optimistic” that the Gaza ceasefire would hold, as he began a visit to 'Israel' focused on supporting the fragile truce and advancing post-war reconstruction efforts.
Speaking at a press conference in Kiryat Gat, where a US-led mission is overseeing the ceasefire, Vance praised progress made so far but acknowledged that maintaining peace would demand continuous vigilance.
“What we've seen the past week gives me great optimism the ceasefire is going to hold,” he said. “I think that everybody should be proud of where we are today. It's going to require constant effort. It's going to require constant monitoring and supervision.”
His comments come despite mounting Israeli unease that Hamas has used the truce to reassert itself in Gaza.
Washington, however, has resisted setting a timeline for Hamas’s disarmament under the US-brokered deal.
Vance is expected to meet Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other 'Israeli' officials in Jerusalem on Wednesday.
The visit follows a warning from US President Donald Trump, who threatened that allied nations in the region could “go into Gaza with a heavy force” if Hamas violates the truce.
