The coastal city of Aqaba marked the launch of the 32nd edition of the “Clean Up the World 2025” campaign on Wednesday, bringing together hundreds of volunteers, environmental groups, and government institutions under the theme “Together Let’s Celebrate the Green Destination.”
The event was held under the patronage of Basma bint Ali and officially launched by Shadi Majali, Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA), on her behalf.
Majali highlighted the campaign’s spirit of unity, saying it reflects “the spirit of cooperation among various components of society, including official institutions, schools, the private sector, security agencies, youth, and volunteers.” He added that the environment is the “pulse of Aqaba, and the sea is a source of life and livelihood for its residents,” emphasizing that protecting marine ecosystems is a shared responsibility.
He also stressed the importance of raising awareness among locals and tourists alike about safeguarding Aqaba’s marine resources, which play a vital role in both economic growth and tourism development along the Red Sea.
The campaign saw the participation of Khaled Al Kurdi, Acting Executive Director of the Royal Society for the Conservation of the Environment, as well as senior officials, security agencies, and over 800 volunteers representing environmental, tourism, cultural, and community groups. Eighteen environmental schools joined the initiative, along with 40 divers from local diving centers.
Volunteers carried out a beach and seabed cleanup at Al Mamlah within the Aqaba Marine Reserve, collecting approximately 1,330kg of waste. The effort reinforced Aqaba’s growing reputation as a sustainable and environmentally conscious destination.
