• Indonesia bars 'Israeli' gymnasts from World Championships in Jakarta
• Decision reflects country’s longstanding support for Palestinian independence and public opposition to 'Israeli' participation

Indonesia has announced that 'Israeli' gymnasts will not be allowed to compete at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, set to begin on October 19 at the Indonesia Arena in Jakarta.

Yusril Ihza Mahendra, Indonesia’s senior minister of law, confirmed on social media that the government has refused visas to the 'Israeli' delegation, citing the nation’s commitment to supporting Palestinian independence.

The 'Israeli' Gymnastics Federation had previously been assured in July that its athletes would be welcome, but their participation sparked widespread opposition in Indonesia amid the war in Gaza.

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung told reporters that the athletes’ presence “would obviously spark public outrage in such a situation.”

Historical context and international response

Indonesia’s decision aligns with its long-standing policy of not hosting 'Israeli' sports delegations, a practice dating back to 1962 when 'Israeli' and Taiwanese athletes were denied entry to the Asian Games. In 2023, FIFA stripped Indonesia of the U-20 World Cup over similar exclusion plans.

The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) acknowledged the situation, stating it recognizes the challenges faced by the host country and hopes “an environment will be created as soon as possible where athletes around the world can enjoy sports safely and with peace of mind.”

Impact on athletes and competition

The withdrawn visa applications included six 'Israeli' athletes, among them Artem Dolgopyat, gold medalist in men’s floor exercise at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and silver medalist in Paris last year. The championships will feature 86 countries, with the event running through October 25.

Indonesia is also actively bidding to host the 2036 Summer Olympics, though the International Olympic Committee holds authority over any national bans involving Olympic participation.
