Trump says Somalia, democrats "have no leaders"

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday likened the Democratic Party to Somalia and said he had asked Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to “take back” Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, a Somali-born congresswoman frequently criticized by Republicans.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office during a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Trump questioned Democratic leadership, saying he was receiving calls from Democrats claiming to be leaders but whom he had “never even heard of.”

“The Democrats have no leader. They remind me of Somalia, OK?” Trump said.

Trump then criticized Omar, referencing a dinner last month with President Mohamud. He claimed he told the Somali leader: “You have somebody from Somalia who’s telling us how to run our country. She’s from Somalia.” Trump said he asked Mohamud to “take her back,” adding that the Somali president refused.

The remarks come amid ongoing tensions between Trump and top Democrats, as well as continued scrutiny of his comments about foreign-born politicians.
