Italy's navy to cease escorting Gaza Sumud Flotilla at 150 nautical miles

Italy's navy announced it will discontinue escorting the international flotilla attempting to deliver aid to Gaza once it reaches 150 nautical miles (approximately 278 kilometers) from the shore.

The Italian frigate accompanying the convoy will cease its mission and issue two final warnings to the flotilla, with the second expected around midnight GMT. This decision comes amid escalating concerns over potential 'Israeli' military attacks. 

The Global Sumud Flotilla consists of about 50 civilian vessels, including activists, parliamentarians, and Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, set sail from Greek ports to challenge 'Israel's' blockade of Gaza and deliver humanitarian aid.

Previously, the flotilla was targeted by drones deploying stun grenades and irritants in international waters near the Greek island of Gavdos. In response, Italy and Spain deployed naval vessels to assist the flotilla, focusing on protection rather than military engagement. 

Despite Italy's proposal to offload aid in Cyprus for distribution by the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, the flotilla rejected the offer, insisting on proceeding directly to Gaza.

Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto emphasized the potential risks of a confrontation with 'Israeli' forces and urged the flotilla to reconsider. He also made a "last appeal" for the activists to accept the compromise to avoid a diplomatic incident. 

As the flotilla approaches the 150 nautical mile limit, the situation remains tense, with both humanitarian and geopolitical implications.
