Public reacts as UK, Australia, Canada recognize Palestine

The announcements by the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada to formally recognize the State of Palestine have sparked an emotional wave of reactions online, with many welcoming the decision while others expressed anger that it came so late.

On social media platform X, one user captured the frustration felt by many, writing, “Recognition of Palestine is shameful, shameful that it took so long & shameful that it took a genocide to push those in power to recognize the state of Palestine, when the death, destruction & forced starvation on the Palestinian people in Gaza has left little, shame on you.”

The decision by three of 'Israel’s' closest allies is widely seen as a significant political shift, particularly as the war in Gaza continues with mounting civilian casualties. For supporters of Palestinian statehood, the recognition is a long-overdue acknowledgment of their struggle for freedom and sovereignty.

Others, however, pointed out that symbolic recognition does not stop the ongoing violence. Several posts criticized Western governments for waiting until “tens of thousands were killed” before taking a step they argue should have been made decades ago.
