US President Donald Trump is expected to hold talks Friday evening in New York with Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani, according to two sources familiar with the matter. The discussions are set to focus on the aftermath of this week’s Israeli strike that targeted Hamas leaders in Doha.

The meeting comes as Trump signals support for Qatar and opposition to the 'Israeli' action, according to Axios.

For Sheikh Mohammed, the talks with Trump and other senior American officials are part of a broader diplomatic effort to rally international pressure on 'Israel' to halt the war in Gaza.

Earlier in the day, Sheikh Mohammed was scheduled to arrive in Washington, D.C., where he would meet Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the White House, the State Department confirmed. Sources also indicated that the Qatari Prime Minister intended to meet Vice President JD Vance, though his office did not immediately comment.

Later on Friday, Sheikh Mohammed is expected to travel to New York for meetings with Trump and White House envoy Steve Witkoff, the sources said. The White House has yet to comment publicly on the gathering.

One key issue on the agenda, according to people briefed on the discussions, is a potential US-Qatar security agreement. Trump reportedly instructed Rubio earlier this week to speed up negotiations on such an arrangement after the 'Israeli' strike in Doha. Qatar is seeking stronger guarantees from Washington, pointing to both the 'Israeli' strike and a recent Iranian attack on a US base in Qatar as reasons to formalize security commitments.

At Qatar’s request, the UN Security Council convened on Thursday to address the 'Israeli' strike. Sheikh Mohammed strongly criticized Israel’s actions but emphasized his country’s ongoing role as a mediator in the Gaza conflict. Qatar has been central to negotiations on the ceasefire and captive releases since October 7.

“Hopefully, the Israeli strike in Qatar won’t affect the Gaza negotiations. We want the hostages out and we want them out soon,” Trump told reporters on Thursday.
