The United Nations Security Council on Thursday condemned the recent strikes on Qatar which targeted Hamas leaders in Doha, but without mentioning ‘Israel’ by name.

The statement, which required approval from all 15 council members, including close ‘Israeli’ ally the United States, expressed condemnation for the recent strikes on Doha, “the territory of a key mediator" in efforts to secure a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

The council also "underlined their support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Qatar."

Emphasis on De-escalation and Qatar's Role

Council members stressed the "underscored the importance of de-escalation" and conveyed their "solidarity with Qatar," while also highlighting its "vital role” in mediation alongside Egypt and the United States.

The council, which convened a public session on the strikes Thursday, affirmed that “releasing the hostages, including those killed by Hamas, and ending the war and suffering in Gaza must remain our top priority."

Since Oct. 7, 2023, the Security Council has largely been unable to act on the ‘Israeli’ aggression on Gaza due to frequent vetoes, particularly by the United States.
