Tens of thousands of people gathered in the Belgian capital on Sunday to express their solidarity with Palestinians.

Police estimated the number of protesters at around 70,000, while organizers said up to 120,000 participated in the demonstration.

The protesters carried red cards and banners demanding an end to what they called the "genocide" in Gaza and called for additional measures against ‘Israel’ to protect Palestinian civilians.

A spokesperson for a Belgian-Palestinian association, Gregory Mouzé, said that "in the face of the ongoing genocide, the measures taken are not yet adequate."

Belgian Minister Condemns EU, Announces Sanctions

In a separate statement on Friday, Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot told AFP that the European Union has not lived up to its responsibilities in the face of the Gaza war, stating that the bloc's credibility in foreign policy is “collapsing”.

The minister pointed to divisions among the 27 member states, which have been unable to agree on imposing sanctions on ‘Israel’ for nearly two years.

The UN declared a state of famine in Gaza at the end of August, citing ‘Israel's’ continuous restriction of humanitarian aid.

In response to this situation, Belgium recently decided to impose its own sanctions on ‘Israel’ and two far-right ministers in Benjamin Netanyahu's government.

The country also pledged to join other nations, including France, in recognizing a Palestinian state on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly this month.
