Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty
Egypt open to UN resolution for international forces in Gaza, says Foreign Minister
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said on Sunday that Cairo has no objection to the issuance of a UN resolution to deploy international forces in Gaza to help secure Palestinians.
In exclusive remarks to regional news outlets, Abdelatty revealed that Egypt has already begun training members of the Palestinian police in Egyptian camps.
He also said Egypt is the target of a smear campaign aimed at distorting its longstanding support for the Palestinian cause and diverting attention from “Israel’s” crimes. Abdelatty stressed that Egypt has stood by the Palestinian people since the 1948 Nakba and will continue defending their rights in all international forums.
Describing the humanitarian situation in Gaza as “catastrophic,” the minister called for urgent international action. He added that the Rafah crossing on the Egyptian side remains open 24/7, but continues to be sealed off by “Israeli” authorities.
Abdelatty said Egypt is exerting maximum pressure on “Israel” and is coordinating with the United States to ensure the entry of humanitarian aid and the reopening of five closed crossings. He noted that 70 percent of the aid that entered Gaza since October 7 has come from Egypt, underscoring what he called Egypt’s essential role.
He also blamed the lack of political will on “Israel’s” part for the failure to reach a ceasefire agreement, pointing out that Cairo continues to push for a comprehensive deal that would include a halt to hostilities, increased aid access, and the release of captives.
Abdelatty said Egyptian intelligence is working around the clock, in coordination with multiple security agencies, to mediate an end to the war and secure the release of detainees held in Gaza.
