Man dies after being sucked into plane engine at Milan airport
A tragic incident at Milan Bergamo Airport in northern Italy claimed the life of a man who was pulled into a plane’s engine just as it was preparing to depart.
The fatal accident occurred Tuesday morning, shortly after the aircraft began taxiing for takeoff on its scheduled flight to Asturias in northwestern Spain.
According to local reports, the man, who has not been identified, entered the airfield under unknown circumstances. Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera cited unnamed airport officials who said the individual ran across the tarmac and was pulled into the aircraft’s engine as it started moving.
The Spanish airline Volotea, which operated the flight, confirmed the man was not a passenger or affiliated with the airline. In a statement, the company said the individual was “seriously injured,” and later reports confirmed his death.
All 154 passengers and six crew members aboard the flight were unharmed. Volotea added that those on board were receiving psychological support in the wake of the traumatic event.
Authorities swiftly halted operations at the airport, delaying flights as emergency services responded to the scene. Normal operations resumed by midday local time.
