Health officials warn of irreversible health effects from methanol poisoning
The aftermath of a deadly methanol poisoning incident in Jordan continues to intensify, with the number of confirmed cases rising to 27, most of whom are currently in intensive care units. So far, nine deaths have been reported in Amman, Zarqa, and Balqa governorates.
Dr. Emad Abu Yaqeen, Director of Technical Affairs at the Ministry of Health, stated that the patients admitted to hospitals were suffering from severe poisoning with clear symptoms, including loss of consciousness and systemic toxicity. He confirmed that several cases were critical and required respiratory support, kidney dialysis, and other life-saving interventions.

Speaking to Roya, Abu Yaqeen explained that methanol is rapidly absorbed into the body and causes dangerous blood acidity imbalances, which can lead to respiratory failure and disruptions in other vital functions. Some patients may also experience neurological damage, loss of vision, and liver and kidney impairment, complications that could become permanent for some.
He further revealed that between 25 percent and 40 percent of those affected by methanol poisoning may suffer permanent blindness due to damage to the optic nerve and retina. Long-term mental and neurological disorders are also possible. While liver and kidney function may recover in some cases, others may suffer from lasting impairment.
Meanwhile, the Public Security Directorate (PSD) announced that investigations had uncovered the involvement of an unlicensed factory producing alcoholic beverages using methyl alcohol (methanol). All individuals involved with the factory, including the employee responsible for mixing the substances, have been arrested. That employee had reportedly obtained the toxic chemical from another individual.

Authorities raided the warehouse that supplied the methanol and seized all materials inside. Security teams, in coordination with the Food and Drug Administration, are continuing to remove the contaminated alcoholic products from markets. Large quantities have already been confiscated, and efforts are ongoing to ensure no deadly substances remain in circulation.
The PSD confirmed that the case will be referred to the judiciary once the investigation concludes, stressing that it will not tolerate any threat to public health and safety.
