Authorities identify source of toxic alcohol that killed seven in Zarqa
Jordan’s Public Security Directorate (PSD) announced Sunday that it has identified the source of the toxic alcohol responsible for the deaths of seven people in Zarqa Governorate, linking it to a licensed alcohol production facility that has since been shut down.
According to a statement from the Public Security spokesperson, the investigation team assigned to the case confirmed that the victims had consumed methanol (methyl alcohol), a toxic substance found in alcoholic beverages produced by the factory.
The investigation began immediately after authorities received reports of the incident. Forensic teams collected samples from the scene and conducted laboratory tests, which confirmed the presence of methanol. Further inspections of several liquor stores in Zarqa led to the discovery of contaminated alcoholic products sold under different brand names, all traced back to the same factory.
Officials then raided the facility and collected internal samples, which revealed methanol residue in one of the production and bottling tanks, confirming contamination at the source.
In coordination with the Jordan Food and Drug Administration (JFDA), the factory was shut down, and authorities seized its contents. Those responsible for operating the facility have been arrested, and legal proceedings are underway.
The spokesperson added that efforts are ongoing, in cooperation with the JFDA, to recall all products distributed by the factory, whether sold directly to shops or through distributors.
The death toll from the poisoning has risen to seven, with one person in critical condition. Investigations remain ongoing.
