The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) issued an urgent statement on Friday expressing deep alarm over the recent escalation of hostilities in the Middle East.

The organization called for all parties to immediately respect international humanitarian law (IHL) to prevent further devastation and loss of life.

The ICRC warned that continued fighting in a region already burdened by multiple conflicts risks igniting a wider regional crisis, with severe humanitarian consequences for countless communities. The escalation threatens to worsen existing emergencies and increase displacement both within countries and across borders.

“Civilians in the Middle East have borne the brunt of repeated crises for decades,” the ICRC said. “What they need most is a respite from armed violence.” The organization stressed the urgent need for de-escalation and prioritizing the protection of human life and dignity.

The ICRC urged all parties involved to strictly adhere to IHL, emphasizing the importance of sparing civilians, medical personnel, and civilian infrastructure from harm. Beyond legal obligations, the committee called for decisive political and diplomatic action to halt hostilities and restore stability.

“We continue engaging with all parties to remind them of their obligations under international humanitarian law to protect civilians, medical workers, and essential services,” the ICRC said. “Our partners in the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement have activated emergency preparedness and response teams on the ground and are addressing urgent humanitarian needs.”

The statement concluded with a call for immediate action: “The time to act is now—to prevent further suffering and uphold the fundamental principles of humanity.”
