The United Arab Emirates (UAE) introduced a new Arabic-language artificial intelligence model, strengthening its position in the Middle East’s rapidly intensifying race to lead in AI innovation.

The model, named Falcon Arabic, was developed by Abu Dhabi’s Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC). It seeks to reflect the full linguistic diversity of the Arab world using a high-quality dataset made up of native Arabic content—rather than translated material, according to a statement released by the council.

In addition to Falcon Arabic, ATRC also rolled out Falcon H1, a model designed to operate efficiently with reduced computing requirements. The council claims it surpasses competing models developed by tech giants such as Meta and Alibaba.

"Today, AI leadership is not about scale for the sake of scale. It is about making powerful tools useful, usable, and universal," said Faisal Al Bannai, Secretary General of ATRC.

The launch reflects the UAE’s ongoing efforts to position itself as a global AI hub. The Gulf nation has invested billions in emerging technologies, leveraging its international partnerships to access cutting-edge systems and hardware.

AI cooperation was also a major talking point during US President Donald Trump’s recent visit to the region. The president highlighted a bilateral AI agreement with the UAE that could give the country access to advanced semiconductors developed by American companies—a significant step forward in its tech ambitions.

Saudi Arabia, too, is ramping up efforts to stake a claim in the AI sector. Earlier this month, the kingdom unveiled a new company dedicated to AI research and infrastructure, with plans to launch one of the world’s most powerful Arabic-language AI models.
