Austria wins Eurovision 2025, "Israel" takes second place
Austria has taken the crown at the 69th Eurovision Song Contest, with classically trained countertenor Johannes Pietsch, known as JJ, winning hearts across Europe with his dramatic pop-opera entry, “Wasted Love.”
The final was held Saturday night in the Swiss city of Basel, where 26 countries competed in a dazzling showcase of musical diversity — from traditional ballads to experimental pop.
“Wasted Love,” a soaring fusion of classical technique and modern melody, drew loud cheers from the arena and strong praise from juries. JJ’s victory marks Austria’s third win in the competition’s history.
JJ secured the top spot with a combined score of 436 points, including 178 from the public vote, pushing "Israel" into second place.
"Israel’s" Yuval Raphael took second place with “New Day Will Rise.". Estonia’s Tommy Cash placed third with the quirky and upbeat “Espresso Macchiato.”
"Israel’s" participation sparked protests in Basel, with pro-Palestinian demonstrators rallying against the country’s military campaign in Gaza. Pro-"Israel" supporters also gathered in response.
Nevertheless, the event went ahead as planned, with the performances and voting process broadcast across Europe. The final results were determined by a mix of public votes and jury scores based on Friday’s untelevised dress rehearsal.
