Three-day-old infant undergoes rare surgery in Karak
A medical team at Karak Governmental Hospital successfully performed a “rare and complex surgery” Thursday on a newborn just three days old, after discovering a severe congenital deformity in the lower back – according to the news agency Petra.
The procedure, led by skull base surgery consultant Dr. Amer Al-Omari, posed a significant medical challenge due to the infant’s young age and the complexity of the deformity, which measured approximately 5.5 centimeters. Additional congenital anomalies were also present in the brain and heart.
Dr. Moataz Al-Qarala, director of Karak Hospital, told the Jordan News Agency (Petra) that the successful outcome reflects the advanced medical capabilities of the hospital and its commitment to delivering quality healthcare despite limited resources.
Dr. Al-Omari noted that this was the first case of its kind treated at the hospital, highlighting the readiness of medical teams to handle intricate and high-risk conditions.
The surgery involved a multidisciplinary team of physicians and nurses, including Dr. Bakr Al-Tarawneh, Dr. Yanal Al-Syaydeh, Dr. Ahmad Haroun, and neonatologist Dr. Ashraf Al-Rwashdeh, along with specialized technicians and nursing staff who contributed to the success of what was described as an exceptional medical intervention.
