Egypt has presented a new proposal aimed at resuming a ceasefire in Gaza, according to two officials speaking to the Associated Press.

A senior Egyptian official revealed that Hamas would release five live captives, including an American-'Israeli' citizen, in exchange for 'Israel' allowing humanitarian aid to enter Gaza and agreeing to a week-long ceasefire.

Additionally, 'Israel' would release hundreds of Palestinian detainees at this stage.

A Hamas official confirmed that the group "responded positively" to the proposal, but did not provide further details. The two officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to disclose the closed-door discussions.

The ceasefire was violated by 'Israel' last week when it launched a series of airstrikes that killed hundreds of Palestinians.

'Israel' had previously rejected the resumption of the ceasefire agreement and its second phase, which Hamas had insisted upon. 'Israel' supported modifications to the deal to facilitate the release of more captives before talks for a permanent ceasefire, originally set to begin in early March.

Hamas stated it would release only the remaining 59 captives, of whom 24 are believed to still be alive, in exchange for the release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners, a permanent ceasefire, and an 'Israeli' withdrawal from Gaza.
