Pope to be discharged after five-week hospital stay
Pope Francis, 88, is set to be discharged from Rome's Gemelli Hospital today, Sunday, following more than five weeks of treatment for double pneumonia.
The Pope, who was admitted on February 14 with a severe respiratory infection, has faced critical moments during his stay, with doctors revealing his condition was life-threatening at times.
Dr. Sergio Alfieri, the lead physician overseeing the Pope’s care, told reporters that Francis experienced "very critical episodes" that put his life at risk. Despite his recovery, doctors emphasize that he will require at least two months of rest to regain full strength.
"It's very important that he follow a period of convalescence and rest for at least two months," Dr. Alfieri stated, adding that the Pope will continue taking medication for an extended period.
Francis is expected to return to his residence at Santa Marta in the Vatican later today. Before his discharge, he will make an appearance from the hospital window to offer a blessing, a gesture the Vatican confirmed in an earlier statement.
Concerns remain about the Pope’s ability to speak after requiring oxygen support during his hospitalization. Addressing this, Dr. Alfieri explained, "When someone has double pneumonia, the lungs are damaged... One of the first things that happens is that our voice diminishes... like when you use your voice too much." However, he reassured that the Pope’s voice is expected to return to normal over time.
