Draft constitution sets Syria’s five-year transition period under Ahmad Sharaa
Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa has received the draft constitutional declaration from the committee tasked with its preparation, expressing hope that it will mark a new beginning for Syria’s reconstruction and development.
"We hope this marks the start of a new era where ignorance is replaced with knowledge and suffering with compassion," Al-Sharaa stated.
The expert committee responsible for drafting the declaration emphasized that the document guarantees freedom of speech, expression, media, publishing, and journalism, while reaffirming the unity of Syrian land and people and respecting cultural diversity. The draft also includes a dedicated chapter on rights and freedoms, aiming to balance societal security with individual liberties.
Key provisions of the draft include:
- Legislative authority granted fully to the People's Assembly.
- Executive power vested in the President, with a five-year transitional period.
- The President retains the authority to declare a state of emergency.
- Judicial independence, with the People’s Assembly holding power over presidential dismissal or limitation of authority.
The committee stated that the draft was based on the outcomes of the National Dialogue Conference, aiming to establish a constitutional framework that enhances political stability and supports Syria’s democratic transition.
