UK asylum claims hit record high in 2024 amid boat arrivals, backlog

The United Kingdom saw a record-breaking surge in asylum claims in 2024, the highest since tracking began in 1979, according to Home Office data released Thursday.

A total of 108,138 individuals applied for asylum, up 18 percent from 2023 and nearly twice the number seen in 2021.

This spike reflects a continued increase in small boat arrivals, which jumped 25 percent from the previous year, though still 20 percent below the 2022 peak.

The rise has intensified pressure on the government to tackle a persistent backlog of asylum decisions. While cases awaiting initial rulings dropped 5 percent to 90,600—impacting about 124,800 people—the backlog remains well above pre-2022 levels.

Immigration detention also rose by 12 percent in 2024, while deportations of small boat arrivals increased 10 percent to 2,251 individuals.

In contrast, citizenship grants surged, with over 269,600 people naturalized in 2024, highlighting shifting immigration trends.
