The initiative officially began with the departure of two NHIndustries NH90 army helicopters from the King Abdullah II Air Base in Zarqa. The mission involves both Italian and Jordanian personnel and aircraft.

Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto emphasized the importance of this operation, calling it a significant demonstration of Italy’s commitment to providing humanitarian relief.

“Even though this mission is not easy to carry out, it is another important demonstration of the commitment of the government, the Defense Ministry, and Italy in supporting Gaza’s civilian population. Our goal is to provide concrete and immediate aid to alleviate, at least in part, the suffering caused by the ongoing conflict, which has finally seen a temporary truce today," Crosetto stated.

He further underscored the fragility of the ceasefire, stressing the importance of continued diplomatic efforts.

“Because we know how difficult it is to achieve real peace and how fragile and precarious any ceasefire can be, we believe that halting hostilities—an essential but minimal prerequisite for true peace—is crucial," he stated. "That is why we firmly believe in dialogue and cooperation as fundamental tools to reduce the current crisis and bring hope to those living in extreme hardship. Right now, we must consolidate the truce, help those in need, and save lives. In this context, collaboration with Jordan—a strategic partner in continuing to build peace—is also essential."

The humanitarian mission stems from a joint initiative by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Jordan’s King Abdullah II, demonstrating the strong cooperation between the two nations in addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
